When Queen Elizabeth shared her classic scones recipe with former US President Eisenhower

Did you know that Queen Elizabeth II, who died Thursday at age 96, preferred a simple and structured diet for her daily life? So when former US President Dwight Eisenhower visited the Queen in Balmoral Castle in 1959, the duo bonded over scones, according to a letter she wrote to the president. She shared that she forgot to share the recipe for her classic scones that she promised Balmoral when they met.

“Seeing a photo of you in today’s paper standing in front of a quail barbecuing reminded me that I never sent you the gout recipe scones that I promised you at Balmoral. I now hasten to do so, and I hope you find them fruitful,” she wrote.

queen elizabeth adds that the quantities mentioned in the recipe are for 16 people and that she decreases the quantity of flour and milk when there are fewer people. “I also tried using golden syrup or molasses instead of sugar and it can be very good too,” she wrote.

She added: “I think the mixture needs a lot of beating while making and shouldn’t sit too long before it cools.”

4 tea cups of flour
4 tablespoons castor bean sugar
2 tea cups of milk
2 whole eggs
2 teaspoons baking soda
3 teaspoons cream of tartar
2 tablespoons melted Butter


*Beat the eggs, sugar and about half the milk together.
*Add the flour and mix well, adding the rest of the milk if needed followed by the baking soda and cream of tartar. Stir in the melted butter.
