Take 3: The Best Korean BBQ Restaurants in Canberra

There is something about the intoxicating smell of Korean barbecue that makes you salivate the moment it hits you. If you haven’t experienced it yet, I hope you will after reading this because if you love the flavors of a barbecue then you must experience an authentic barbecue lunch or dinner. Korean.

Imagine a stack of different cuts of meat and a range of fresh seafood that you can sear and grill to perfection on the table you’re sitting at. Add a plate of vegetables (all for balance) to add to the barbecue, a selection of tasty banchan (Korean side dishes), a plate of Korean fried chicken, a cold beer or two, and you’ve got yourself a delicious Korean feast.

Although our international travel destinations are limited, we are fortunate to live in a country that is a melting pot of cultures, which translates into food, people and experiences that can transport you to other countries without even take the plane.

Korean barbecue is an experience best enjoyed with a large group of people just because it means you can eat more. If you’re going as a couple, make sure you’re hungry and wear your stretchy pants or skirt.

In my opinion, there are some things that make some Korean barbecue restaurants better than others – the use of charcoal instead of gas, the quality of the meat and the sides.

So taking all that into account, here are three of the best restaurants in Canberra where you can enjoy delicious Korean barbecues.

Hangari Kimchi

Hangari Kimchi was the first authentic Korean barbecue restaurant in Canberra and they have been serving Korean food in Canberra for 12 years. They were previously located in a small restaurant in Dickson. The modern restaurant is now complemented with booths and tables with grills and standard tables if you don’t want the Korean barbecue experience.

They also have outdoor space and private rooms that can be booked for events and private dinners.

Their selection of tasty meats, the use of charcoal, a generous selection of delicious banchan, and 12 different types of Korean fried chicken will have you coming back for more. They also make very tasty spicy fondues – try the spicy seafood (if you love seafood… and can handle a little heat).

Hangari Kimchi is located 5/55 Woolley St, Dickson and is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. for dinner, and 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for dinner, and Friday through Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The tasty hill

Tasty Hill is the newest Korean barbecue restaurant to open in Canberra. It is located in the space that Hannara Korean BBQ previously occupied. The restaurant has been transformed into an upscale Korean barbecue restaurant with semi-private rooms that resemble hanoks (traditional Korean houses).

Try the chilli and shrimp tempura at Tasty Hill if you like spicy food.

One of my favorite things about The Tasty Hill is the way they serve their banchan. Everyone gets their own board so you don’t have to share. Their banchan is unique and the kimchi is delicious. If you like to eat spicy dishes, try the chilli and shrimp tempura. A crispy tempura batter coats a succulent shrimp stuffed in a chili pepper.

Try out the different wagyu cuts at The Tasty Hill.

The crispy dumplings, short wagyu ribs, and soy marinated wagyu rib fingers are also delicious. It is one of the only Korean barbecue restaurant that allowed us to cook our own barbecue without interference. There is usually a member of staff to assist you through the cooking process so that you don’t burn your food (and burn down their restaurant). Having eaten at many Korean barbecue restaurants, I enjoyed doing it on our own for a change, although help is appreciated when you are a newbie to Korean barbecue.

The Tasty Hill is located at 1/3 16 Moore St, Canberra and is open for dinner from 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

Hanok Korean barbecue

Hanok Korean BBQ is the newest Korean restaurant to open in Dickson and it doesn’t disappoint. It is very close to a number of other Korean restaurants including Hangari Kimchi.

They have a great choice of wagyu on their menu and platters for large groups so you can order one and try a range of meats, seafood and vegetables to share. The spicy pork belly is delicious and their meat is fresh and tasty.

If you want to try something different, order the cold beef noodle soup. It’s a very popular Korean dish and tastes delicious in the warmer months. You are given a few bottles of different condiments so that you can add a range of flavors to suit your taste.

Hanok Korean BBQ is located at 6/28 Challis St, Dickson and is open Monday through Sunday for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and for dinner from 5 to 9 p.m.
