Owner and founder Marcus Jones‘ Grandmother, Miss Essie, is the inspiration behind the barbecue restaurant in Murray. Essie’s determination and faith laid the foundation for Jones to start a family business. Jones remembers how Essie moved her family of six from Arkansas to California on her own: “The community took care of her and she took care of them,” says Jones. “This relationship is what the company Miss essie is: we are not just a family to be consumed and taken. We want to build something that builds lasting relationships.
The line of determination goes further back to Jones’ great-great-grandfather, who owned a farm and a small grocery store on site to support his family and the neighboring community. “I fell in love with the fact that my grandfather was a black, independent man who worked hard to have his own business for his family… even in the face of opposition,” Jones says. He notes how these ideals are to be translated in today’s society; how he creates a legacy for his family as well as his great-great-grandfather.
As she gets older, Jones understands how much Essie has supported the whole family through her cooking. Jones says, “She took care of Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. My grandmother and spirituality were the pillars of the family. Jones’ culinary knowledge stems from his grandmother’s understanding of home-cooked meals in small quantities. He sought to create a unique sauce that enhanced the integral southern style food it accompanies. A sauce, he says, “that’s full-bodied, refreshing and makes you want to go back. »Jones and his father, Manuel Jones, started cooking a sauce recipe handed down by Essie and officially started Miss essie as it is called today in 2008 with its partner, Deonn Henderson.

Jones and his father took the heart of family “backyard cooking” recipes and created a sauce that relies on spices and flavor for a product that stands out from the crowd. Smoky southern barbecue ribs, southern honey barbecue pulled pork and honey glazed chicken thighs are slow cooked and prepared to work with each barbecue sauce‘s unique spice blend. Vegetarians or vegans can order smoked portabella mushroom lettuce wraps or a jackfruit pulled pork sandwich with apple cider vinegar barbecue sauce, a combination Jones says he’s proud of. because “they’re healthy, tasty and loved by non-vegans too. ” Jenny gnash, Miss essie Marketing Director, publishes recipes on the website that infuse their barbecue sauces into every dish.
