Easy Air Fryer Cheeseburger Recipe Yields Delicious Results With Minimal Work

Summer is here, the 4th of July is approaching, and that can only mean one thing: we’re in the middle of barbecue season.

And when it’s BBQ season, there’s one thing I want on my plate: a delicious, juicy burger.

But a lot of people don’t have a grill handy or don’t want a puff of smoke in their tiny apartment – I live in New York, I get it – but that doesn’t rule out a delicious burger on this day. of independence. You can make a nice tasty burger in your air fryer. Yes really.

Now, is it going to be as good as a burger seared on a roaring charcoal grill? Maybe not. The flavor added by very high heat and real fire is hard to replicate. But a good air fryer burger is better than the garden variety burger you’ll get at a gas grill. Here’s what you need to know.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef

  • 3 burger buns

  • 3 slices of cheddar cheese

  • 2 tbsp. soya sauce

  • About 1 teaspoon of salt, pepper, garlic powder and chili powder

  • A few romaine lettuce leaves

  • 1 tomato

  • 1 red onion

  • 1 tbsp. Mayonnaise

  • 1 tbsp. Red wine vinegar

  1. Place the ground beef in a large mixing bowl. Then season it generously with salt, pepper, garlic powder, chili powder and soy sauce. Stir to evenly combine.

  2. Shape the ground beef into three equal sized patties. Press them down so they are at least a little bigger than the diameter of your buns. The patties will shrink as they cook and the goal is to have full coverage of the bread.

  3. Preheat your air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Toss your buns into the air fryer as it preheats to toast the bread.

  4. Once the air fryer is preheated, remove the buns then spray the basket with oil. Add burgers and air fry for eight minutes.

  5. Meanwhile, cut the romaine lettuce into thin ribbons and season with mayonnaise and red wine vinegar. Cut the tomato and onion into ultra-thin slices and set aside.

  6. When there’s a minute left on your air fryer, top the burgers with cheese (or not, if you don’t want cheese).

  7. Once cooked, let the burgers rest for a minute. Place the thin slices of onion on the bottom buns. Put the lettuce and tomato on the top buns. Place each burger on the bottom bun covered with onions, then place the top bun on top of the burger. You can also dress up with your favorite condiments, like ketchup or mustard, and enjoy.

It’s a crazy simple recipe. That’s the purpose of an air fryer – it’s supposed to make things easier. One thing to keep in mind: Be sure to season the meat well. This is probably the most important step in this recipe. The instructions are only rough estimates of how much seasoning to use – I season with my heart. Feel free to substitute garlic or chili powder and add whatever you want – onion powder, paprika, cayenne pepper or any number of seasonings would work, for example. Just be sure to use enough salt. And I think it helps boost that saltiness with soy sauce or something similar like Worcestershire sauce or Tamari. It ensures there are salty and umami goodness throughout the burger and helps keep it moist.

This is the biggest downside you should be aware of. An air fryer is actually a small, high-powered convection oven, and cooking a burger in any type of oven risks drying it out. An ideal burger is seared on the outside but juicy and pink in the middle. This recipe does its best to achieve this result. Depending on your air fryer, you may only need six minutes of cooking time. If you can, use a meat thermometer and pull your burgers to whatever temperature you prefer.

Otherwise, the recipe is simple. Toast the buns while preheating (one of my favorite tricks). Cut, then dress the lettuce. I think that little extra step adds tons of flavor to the burger. The acid in the red wine vinegar makes every bite a little tangier, while the mayonnaise adds some fat to lean meat. Then cut the tomatoes and onions, add the cheese and enjoy.

This is what my final product looked like. Not bad for an air fryer, right?

The verdict? It’s a good burger. Done right, it’s juicy and, honestly, probably way better than the burger you get from a hack on the grill at your local BBQ. The air fryer gets hot enough and enough air circulates that there is something resembling a burn on the burger. The dressed lettuce adds a nice touch and the seasoning of the meat means you get great flavor. If you don’t have the time or resources for a charcoal barbecue, this isn’t a bad option for your 4th of July dinner party.
