Carolina Treet uses a special ingredient in barbecue sauce

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – North Carolina is known for its unique barbecue and barbecue sauces, and while produce comes and goes from grocery store shelves, a Wilmington family recipe remains in stores.

Carolina Treet was developed in 1953 in the meat cutting room of a small independent grocery store.

After being used for years to barbecue whole chickens, people started asking for ways to bring the sauce home. A smaller Carolina Treet container was therefore developed.

While most of the brand name barbecue sauces you find in grocery stores have a tomato base, Carolina Treet uses something different to give it its flavor.

“It has flour in it and most other barbecue sauces don’t have it,” Lenwood King, Jr. said. “It’s actually really a barbecue sauce for cooking, so you really have to cook with it, because it contains flour flour and that is the main difference To my knowledge, I have never seen another barbecue sauce that contains flour.

After achieving success with its exclusive barbecue sauce, the company also developed a line of tea concentrates under the name Aunt Bertie. Bertie was a member of the Kings family.

Despite the downturn in the economy, Carolina Treet posted good sales figures as more people prepare their own food at home.
