Best BBQ Chicken Marinade Recipe

Nothing says summer grilling better than BBQ chicken marinade. It’s tangy, juicy and has just the right amount of char, thanks to the sugars in the barbecue sauce. This recipe calls for imagining a ready-to-use bottle of sauce, but if you want to make your own, there are a few directions to take. You can take the classic Kansas City-style barbecue sauce or Carolina barbecue sauce roads, or go wild with a can of soda for Dr. Pepper barbecue sauce.

Serve marinated BBQ chicken with classic summer barbecue sides like coleslaw, corn salad or potato salad.

Marinating chicken in barbecue sauce before grilling infuses every bite of flavor. At least two hours will do, but the more comfortable the chicken is with the marinade, the better. Plus, overnight in the fridge not only results in tastier chicken, it helps you get a head start on prep.

If you’re not used to cleaning your grill grates before cooking, now is the time to start. Clean, oiled grates ensure the chicken skin will turn out crispy rather than sticky.

The recipe is flexible enough to use any type of bone-in chicken. Or, use a whole chicken cut into pieces to please all parties. All of which means it’s time to break out your instant-read thermometer. Since piece sizes vary and bone-in chicken can take a while to cook, an accurate digital readout will tell you when each piece of chicken is at 165º.
