Whether you write it ‘barbecue’ or ‘BBQ’ we all know summer is perfect for throwing some meat on the grill and following it up with a glass of lemonade. With the barbecue being the only thing on everyone’s mind, we wanted to know where you were having dinner this summer. After asking all of you on my private Instagram page @a_dashofthat via a weeklong survey story, here are the results! Below are the top three places for the most popular barbecues on the coast:
Southern Soul barbecue
This old gas station turned barbecue on St. Simons Island is a local favorite. Featured as Southern Living’s ‘Best of the South of 2018’, this barbecue restaurant serves a delicious variety of sandwiches, ribs, brisket and delicious side dishes for vacationers and residents of the Brunswick area. Quamine “Que” Haywood, who is the pit master of this popular spot, says that “our mild flavor and locally sourced oak wood from Jones Wood Company gives it [barbecue] that smoky flavor.
Their signature pulled pork is slow cooked for 12 to 14 hours and seasoned with their homemade rubs. Customers can also choose from their signature barbecue sauces like “Sweet Georgia Soul”, “Red Swine Wine” or “Low Country Soul” to name a few. In addition to the half-pound pulled pork platter, customers can choose from two sides like their Brunswick Stew, Coleslaw, or Fried Okra. They also offer an option of a bag of fried green beans accompanied by a buttermilk ranch.

Gerald’s pig and shrimp
One of Gerald’s Schantz’s first restaurants – Gerald’s Diner was once a staple in downtown Savannah, but Gerald Schantz decided to get closer to the Tybee Island swamps and never looked back.
Gerald’s Pig and Shrimp with its award-winning fried shrimp and signature barbecue is a favorite among Tybee locals. Gerald said the restaurant has “a great atmosphere, it’s across the road from the marsh and it’s a roadside joint.” All the unique features that make this barbecue spot stand out along the US-80 freeway. Their St. Louis ribs are slow cooked on the grill for 5 to 6 hours and seasoned with their secret blend.

Bowtie Barbecue Co.
Let’s end this article with a bow. Our final spot is Bowtie Barbecue Co. where whiskey and barbecue dishes come together. This food truck and restaurant is a favorite with locals in Savannah and a lot of it has to do with the food and customer service according to their front desk manager, Amanda Dotson.
Offering batter-free fried chicken that customers expect to wait 30 minutes, and “fairy dust”-flavored brisket and pork ribs for added flavor. Amanda says that “we take smoking our barbecue seriously and we are very diligent about it”. Bowtie Barbecue also breaks the main course mold by offering a whiskey collection that can be paired with any of their barbecues for the complete summer experience.
